Second Verse, Will It Be the Same as the First?
Date: Thursday, February 9, 2060
Time: Evening
Place: A New Meiji Metro transit train
Characters: Sano, Kenshin

Sano was a competent cook. He didn’t mind doing it, but he also loved to eat out, especially if the food was something a bit exotic. Sano was definitely almost a ‘foodie’.

He’d been on a mission up the Yangtze with the Sekihoutai. Being a hungry, young bunch, they were always on the hunt for good eateries whenever they had the luxury of actually billeting in a town and not out under the stars. When passing through Nanjing on that op, they’d found a few that were worth revisiting.

The ex op had very fond memories of one in particular. It was a little hole in the wall place that made salty duck better than any other he'd ever tasted. He’d been told by the proprietor of the joint that salty duck had been made in Nanjing for over 1,000 years and was the number one food specialty in town. It was tender, fragrant and fresh, tasty beyond words.

Today Sano’s taste buds just had a hankering for some of that delicious duck. Seemed like ages since he’d last eaten it. After some research he’d found a family run place that had great ratings. The proprietors were even Nanjing natives. The only problem was that it was across town, a train ride away.

For some reason the ex-op never enjoyed riding trains. He always thought of them as noisy, belching beasts, regardless of the fact that they were clean, quiet and streamlined. He was quite amused at the things his imagination could conjure up at times, almost like it was stuck in another time and place.

So, here he was on the station platform waiting for the modern day marvel of transportation. As soon as it slipped in and came to a stop, the doors slid open and a minor flood of humanity pushed forward. At least it wasn’t too busy tonight, he’d waited until after rush hour, since the restaurant he was headed to was open fairly late, probably to accommodate all the guys working second shift.

There was an empty spot right across from the door, so he plopped himself down and made himself comfortable, reminding himself which station to get off. This particular train was not an express so it would take a while, just enough time to work up a heartier appetite than he already had. Sano figured that he’d even get an extra order to take home with him in case he needed a snack later on.
